The Dear Jack Foundation is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life and emotional well-being of adolescents and young adults (AYA) diagnosed with cancer. Founded by musician Andrew McMahon, a leukemia survivor himself, the foundation focuses on the specific challenges faced by patients between the ages of 15 and 39.
Young adults diagnosed with cancer often face unique disruptions during a formative period of life. In addition to the physical toll of treatment, many encounter challenges related to mental health, fertility, financial instability, educational and career interruption, and social isolation.
Dear Jack Foundation addresses these needs through programs that offer individualized support, healing opportunities, and peer connection.
Key Programs and Services
Breathe Now Wellness Retreats
These four-day retreats are designed for young adult cancer survivors and their partners. The program promotes emotional healing and reconnection after treatment, helping couples strengthen their relationships through yoga, therapy, group discussion, and wellness activities.LifeList Program
This wish-granting program offers hope and inspiration to AYA patients currently in treatment. Participants create a “LifeList” of meaningful experiences or items they would like to receive, giving them something tangible to look forward to while navigating their cancer journey.Mental Health Support
The foundation places a strong emphasis on mental health and emotional recovery. Through guided programming and partnerships with licensed clinicians, Dear Jack ensures young adults have access to the psychological tools they need to heal and rebuild their lives after cancer.
The AYA community is often underserved in cancer care systems. Dear Jack Foundation’s work fills a critical gap by creating age-appropriate, emotionally resonant support that extends beyond treatment and into survivorship.
