Knowledge. Support. Empower

At the Byrd Cancer Foundation, we are connectors at heart. We bridge the gap between cancer patients, advocates, and organizations, ensuring that meaningful resources, support, and healing experiences reach the people who need them most.

Our mission is rooted in community and compassion. Through initiatives like our Cancer Connect Program, we guide individuals toward critical services—from emotional support and wellness programs to navigation assistance and trusted educational tools—meeting people exactly where they are in their journey.

We believe that no one should navigate cancer alone. By bringing people, partners, and resources together, we create pathways to knowledge, support, and empowerment that strengthen our community as a whole.

Let us help you find what you need, connect with who can help, and move forward with confidence and care.

It takes time to plan cancer treatment. Talk to your doctor about when it’s likely to start. Make sure you understand all your treatment choices before deciding what’s best for you.

What Is Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy, also known as radiotherapy, is a medical treatment that uses high-energy radiation to target and destroy cancer cells or to prevent their growth. This form of treatment is commonly used to treat various types of cancer. It works by damaging the DNA of cancer cells, which prevents them from dividing and growing further. Radiation therapy can be administered externally, where a machine directs radiation beams towards the affected area, or internally, by placing a radioactive source near or inside the tumor. The goal of radiation therapy is to eliminate or shrink the cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. It is often used in conjunction with other cancer treatments, such as surgery or chemotherapy, to provide a comprehensive approach to cancer care.
