Raquel Fountain: The Power of Self-Advocacy in Early Breast Cancer Detection

Byrd Cancer Foundation

Raquel Fountain’s breast cancer journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of self-advocacy when it comes to our health. Her story began when she discovered a lump in her breast. Despite initial reassurance from her doctors that it was likely nothing to worry about, Raquel trusted her instincts and pushed for further testing. This decision led to an early diagnosis of Stage 2 breast cancer—a diagnosis that might have been missed if she hadn’t listened to her body.

Raquel’s diagnosis was Stage 2, ER/PR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. Here’s a breakdown of what that means:

  • Stage 2 breast cancer indicates that the cancer is growing but still contained within the breast or nearby lymph nodes. It’s considered an early stage where treatment is typically very effective if caught on time.

  • ER/PR-positive means the cancer cells have receptors for estrogen (ER) and progesterone (PR). This type of cancer can grow in response to these hormones, but it also means that hormonal therapy, which blocks or lowers estrogen and progesterone, can be an effective treatment.

  • HER2-negative means the cancer cells do not have an excess of the HER2 protein, which is responsible for cell growth. HER2-negative cancers do not respond to therapies that target the HER2 protein, but they can be treated with other methods like chemotherapy and hormonal therapies.

Raquel’s cancer type, ER/PR-positive, HER2-negative, is one of the more common breast cancer subtypes. Hormonal therapies like tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitors are often used to treat this type of cancer by blocking the body’s ability to produce or use estrogen.

Raquel’s experience emphasizes the need to advocate for oneself, especially when something doesn’t feel right, even if medical professionals may suggest otherwise. Her story highlights a crucial lesson: we know our bodies best, and it’s essential to push for the care we deserve. Early detection is often key in treating breast cancer, and Raquel’s proactive approach made all the difference.

Now a survivor, Raquel shares her journey to encourage others to trust their intuition and never settle for less when it comes to their health. She hopes her story will inspire others to take control, ask questions, and advocate for themselves when faced with uncertainty. Raquel’s strength and determination stand as a testament to the power of trusting oneself and seeking the necessary care.
