Yahaira Morales-Diaz: A Survivor’s Journey through Triple Negative Breast Cancer

In November 2019, just days before Thanksgiving, Yahaira Morales-Diaz’s world changed. At 34 years old, with no family history of cancer and leading an active, healthy lifestyle, Yahaira was shocked to find a lump in her right breast while lying down. That moment marked the beginning of a life-altering journey.

Her diagnosis? Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC)—a rare and aggressive form of breast cancer that disproportionately affects younger women and women of color. TNBC is particularly challenging because it lacks the hormone receptors that typical treatments target, making it more difficult to treat. But Yahaira was determined to fight.

Throughout the next year, Yahaira underwent chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation. The timing of her diagnosis and treatment couldn’t have been more challenging, as it occurred during the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic. This added an extra layer of complexity to her medical care, requiring her to face her treatment largely alone due to social distancing restrictions. But despite the isolation, Yahaira’s resilience shone through.

Yahaira’s journey is a testament to the power of self-awareness and early detection. “One piece of advice I would give is to stay aware and know your body,” she says. “Cancer doesn’t discriminate by color, race, ethnicity, or age. If you notice something unusual or feel something is wrong, don’t ignore it. Seek medical attention and don’t let anyone dissuade you. Make sure you get the answers you need.”

Her story serves as a vital reminder that breast cancer can affect anyone, regardless of their background or family history. Yahaira’s bravery and unwavering spirit continue to inspire others, demonstrating the importance of advocating for your health, trusting your instincts, and never giving up hope.

As Yahaira celebrates her survivorship, she remains committed to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and self-advocacy, particularly for those who, like her, may not fit the typical profile for breast cancer risk. Her resilience through this journey is an example of hope and courage, reminding us all to pay attention to our bodies and seek the care we deserve.
